２１世紀を動かしていく君たちへ
現在日本で生活するわたしたちは、学びたいと思った時に、学びたいと思ったことを学ぶことができます。
そのただ中にいるわれわれは、そのことになかなか気が付きません。しかし、これはとても幸せなことなのです。
地球規模で物事を考えると、「学ぶこと」が特権であることに気付かされるはずです。
しかしながら、特権を得たと喜んでばかりはいられません。この特権には大きな責務があるのです。
世界市民と呼べるはじめての世代である君たちには、経済危機と環境危機について、先進国がしなければならないことを地球規模で考え、リーダーシップを発揮していく責任があります。
すべての危機には機会があります。それは善を形成する力が弱った時にこそ起きるものです。
この世の中には２種類のタイプの人間がいます。
ひとつは、安定・安全だけを求め、目先の利益だけを気にして生きるタイプの人間です。
もう一方は、大海原にこぎ出でて新たな世界を求めようとチャレンジしていく人間です。
一見後者のタイプは無鉄砲でとても危険に見えます。
そして多くいる前者のタイプの人間から非難もされます。
歴史を紐解いても、早くに成功を収めるのは前者のタイプの人間です。
しかし前者の人間が大勢を占めていったとき、善を形成する力が弱っていくのです。
長い期間で見たとき、新たな発見をしたり、より大きな成功を収め未知の世界を探る原動力となって
世界を動かしていくのは後者のタイプの人間なのです。
誰でも不安です。そして誰にも先のことはわかりません。
だからこそ「今」、自分で決めたこと、自分が正しいと思ったことに精一杯「生きる」のです。
では何をもとに決めるのか。正しいの基準とは何か。
この情報をもたらしてくれるのが「学問」です。謙虚に学ぶ姿勢を大切にしてください。
自分がどうなりたいのか、しっかりと計画を立てて、実行し、振り返り反省してください。
グローバルリーダーには、ビジョンと叡智に基づいた行動がとれること、合理的な決定を迅速にすること、
変革の勇気をもつこと、常に外に目を向けることが必要となってきます。
このような資質は「学ぶ」事によって育成されます。
与えられた特権を存分に行使してください。そしてその責務を全うしてください。
「学問」は「心」です。「心」が正しくなければ、その「学問」もまた正しくありません。
自分の「心」が「学問」が正しいかを、常にチェックしてください。
うまくいったときは「反省」を、また逆にうまくいかなかったときは、それに気付いたことに「感謝」をしてください。
冷静な判断をくだす「心」を、強い「心」を、そして、やさしい「心」を育ててください。

A Message to the Next Leaders of the 21st Century.
Today we live in a country where we can learn and study anything what we want. Few Japanese, however, actually recognize this fact. I think we should appreciate the fortune of living in this country. From a global perspective, studying itself is a privilege. But we must keep in mind that “with great privilege comes great responsibility”. Young generation living in developed countries now has the responsibility as a global citizen: a citizen who always keeps his or her eyes open to global issues and shows leadership to solve them.
Serious global issues lie right in front of us such as environmental crisis and global financial crisis. Even in the midst of great crisis, we can discover great opportunities. Opportunities do arise when a society degenerates with the loss of virtue.
There are two types of people in the world: those who think about their own profit and security only, and those who dare to venture out on an open sea. Former type of people think that an adventurous guy tends to be thoughtless and dangerous. If you take a look at history, former type of people often achieve success in a short span. But when such people become the majority, the society loses its ability to foster virtue. We must know that the latter type of person is the one who makes an important discovery and who achieves greater success that drives us to move forward to the unknown world.
Everyone is uncertain of what’s going to happen. We need to live through this uncertain world. That’s why it is important to think and decide what is right. But how can I decide what is really right? Where is the measure of rightness? Although the answer varies from person to person, it is true it can only be derived from continuous study. I hope young people will humbly devote themselves to learning and studying. It doesn’t mean just studying blindly. It means studying with a steady process of plan, do, check and act in order to become what you really want to be.
Global leaders are required to have intellectual qualities: to have vision and wisdom for every action; to make reasonable and quick decision; to have the courage to change; to take a broad view of things. These qualities can be acquired through study. Use your privilege as much as possible. And don’t forget to fulfill your responsibilities.
Look at a person devoting himself to study. His leaning attitude reflects his heart. If the heart is not sincere, the study also may not be a right one. Therefore, it is important to periodically stop to think about what you are doing. If you think you are doing well, that’s the time to review it with modesty. If you think you are not doing well, you are lucky to have a chance to modify the route you are taking. Cultivate your heart: a calm, strong and kind heart.
